Case Study: Delivering Heavy-Duty Refurbished DONGFENG 6x4 Garbage Compactor Trucks to DRC

Project Overview

Client: Municipal Waste Management & Environmental Services Contractor

Location: Kinshasa & Lubumbashi, DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo)

Equipment: Refurbished DONGFENG 6x4 Garbage Compactor Truck (18m³–20m³ Capacity)

Industry: Urban Sanitation & Commercial Waste Logistics

Background & Customer Challenge

With rapid urbanization in major DRC hubs like Kinshasa and Lubumbashi, local governments and private sanitation contractors face mounting challenges in municipal solid waste collection. Transporting loose, low-density urban waste over long distances to disposal sites requires high-volume, high-compression equipment.

A leading private sanitation company in Kinshasa secured a long-term commercial and residential waste collection contract. However, they faced several operational hurdles:

  • Severe Road Conditions: Unpaved city perimeter roads and steep terrain required a rigid, high-ground-clearance 6x4 chassis.

  • Compactor Hydraulic Reliability: Waste collection involves thousands of continuous hydraulic compression cycles daily; any pump or valve failure leads to costly route delays.

  • Capital Budget Constraints: Importing brand-new compression garbage trucks required excessive upfront capital, delaying their project rollout.

They needed a durable, cost-effective, and fully reconditioned Chinese brand garbage truck with high compression efficiency and easily accessible spare parts.

The Solution: Refurbished DONGFENG 6x4 Garbage Compactor Truck

Our export team evaluated the client’s daily payload capacity and collection routes, recommending the DONGFENG 6x4 Garbage Compactor Truck (18m³–20m³ body).

Why the DONGFENG 6x4 is Ideal for DRC Sanitation Projects:

  • Proven Dongfeng Cummins Engine: Powered by a robust Cummins C-series / ISD engine (260HP–300HP), offering exceptional fuel economy, high reliability under heavy loads, and widespread local maintenance expertise across Central Africa.

  • Heavy-Duty 6x4 Chassis: Offers high load capacity, superior axle durability, and stable navigation over potholed and unpaved municipal transit routes.

  • High Compression Ratio (3:1 to 4:1): The heavy-duty hydraulic compression system significantly increases waste density, enabling the truck to haul substantially more waste per trip compared to standard dump trucks.

Our Inspection & Refurbishment Process

To ensure problem-free daily operation upon arrival in DRC, the vehicle underwent our rigorous Reconditioning & Testing Protocol:

  1. Engine & Drivetrain Overhaul: Complete diagnostic testing of the engine, transmission, and drive axles. All worn seals, gaskets, oil filters, and fluids were replaced with original OEM components.

  2. Hydraulic System Renewal: The hydraulic oil tank, high-pressure oil pipes, multi-way directional valves, and hydraulic cylinders were fully serviced and pressure-tested to eliminate leaks and pressure loss.

  3. Compactor Body Anti-Corrosion Treatment: The waste body, tailgate hopper, and slider assembly were sandblasted, reinforced with wear-resistant steel plates, and treated with multi-layer anti-rust marine paint to resist sewage corrosion.

  4. Bin Lifter & Tailgate Testing: The rear bin lifter mechanism (compatible with standard 120L/240L/660L/1100L plastic and steel waste bins) was repeatedly tested to ensure smooth lifting and dumping operation.

Delivery & Results

The truck was shipped via Ro-Ro vessel to Matadi Port (for Kinshasa) with full export documentation and transit tracking support provided throughout the shipping journey.

Key Deliverables:

  • 45% Capital Cost Savings: Acquired a fully reconditioned 18m³ compactor truck at less than half the price of a new unit.

  • 30% Trip Efficiency Gain: High hydraulic compression reduced the required daily trips to disposal grounds, cutting fleet fuel consumption per ton of waste collected.

  • 98% Operational Uptime: During the first 6 months of daily two-shift collection service in Kinshasa, the truck operated without major mechanical or hydraulic failure.

Customer Feedback

"Managing urban waste in Kinshasa requires extremely tough vehicles. We were cautious about buying a refurbished compactor truck, but this DONGFENG 6x4 exceeded our expectations. The hydraulic compactor works with high power, the Cummins engine runs smoothly, and the body paint and steel reinforcement look brand new. This investment allowed us to expand our contract area months ahead of schedule."
